Q-4-U:
What operating system does the Zerion server run on
?

Frequently
Asked
Questions

About The Site
Q:    What is Zerion?

A:   Zerion is a new internet host for non-commercial artists and musicians.

Q:    How is the word "Zerion" pronounced?

A:   It's pronounced "Zeer-ee-on" - relate it to the word "zero"

Q:    What does the word ''Zerion'' mean?

A:   Zerion is a made up name, though it is derived from the word ''zero'' - as in ''zero-cost'' to sign-up.

Q:    Where is Zerion located geographically?

A:   Austin, Texas, USA.

Q:    Who made Zerion?

A:   Zerion was created by Benjamin Solomon on January 16, 2000. All artwork, HTML, and automation on the Zerion site is also a creation of Benjamin Solomon.

Q:    Who is the "Zerion team"?

A:

Q:    Wow, I'd really like to know more about how Zerion works - would you answer specific questions?

A:   Absolutely! I never tire of talking about Zerion and sharing knowledge about how it works. Ask away!

Artist Wallboard
Q:    How am I supposed to use the wallboard?

A:   The main idea of the Artist Wallboard is to convey recent additions to your site. For example, you might post a short message such as "New trance tune completed by our group", and link directly to the file or page that you wish.

Q:    Why are only Zerion members allowed to post messages to the wallboard?

A:   The Artist Wallboard replaces the recently retired (and quite out-dated) "Music Showcase". The Artist Wallboard is a way for Zerion artists to let visitors to the main site know about content and changes to the artists' site.

Q:    Why did only part of my message show up in the wallboard?

A:   The maximum number of characters you can put in a message is 255.

Q:    Why are some messages in bold text, while others are not?

A:   Messages less than 100 characters in length are automatically bolded. Perhaps shorter is better!

Q:    Why would I want to delete my previous messages?

A:   The Artist Wallboard is unique because it allows posters to remove their own posts. This is helpful if a comment or link is no longer accurate.

Q:    How do I remove myself completely from the Artist Wallboard?

A:   Simply enter your username, password, and remove everything from the Message and Link field. When you post a blank message and link, you will be completely removed from the wallboard.

Member Services
Q:    Is this service free?

A:   Yes, Zerion is 100% completely free to artists and musicians.

Q:    If your service is free, how do you make money off this site?

A:   This site does not exist for the purpose of making money.

Q:    Then why does this site exist?

A:   This site was created to inspire and encourage new and original creative works of art.

Q:    Unlimited space? You mean I could upload 2 gigs of my music/art?

A:   Use common sense - of course there is a finite amount of space. It's figured that most accounts' average size is around 25 megabytes. Quotas are not imposed because that tends to limit artistic expression; but I'd rather not see Zerion become just another music/art dumpground - there are plenty of sites already that are just musical/artistic repositories.

Q:    How do you know I won't use this account illegally?

A:   Make no mistake, all accounts are closely monitored. But, I'm sure you'll do the right thing, won't you?

Q:    Are you going to sell my e-mail address?

A:   No. Your e-mail address is used to contact you regarding important information about Zerion and your account.

Q:    Are you going to sell the art/music I upload?

A:   No. This site does not exist for the purpose of making money.

Q:    Why are all my files accessible by anonymous FTP users?

A:   The purpose of providing free space is to promote and encourage people to create original works of art of their own, and at the same time positively benefit the Internet public. By making all files public, this purposely destroys the incentive to use the space for illegal or commercial use, private storage, and otherwise secret material the Internet public wouldn't benefit from.

Technical Support
Q:    I signed up a day ago, why isn't my account created yet?

A:   The sign-up request form does not automatically create an account - it sends a request for sign-up to the site admin who then creates the account. Often times your account may be created as soon as you sign up (if the admin is there), other times it could take up to three days to process your request form.

Q:    Why does myaccount work but if I go to http://myaccount.zerion.com it shows the Zerion home page?

A:   Give that a little time - it takes awhile before the web-server will refresh its configuration files. Since it probably hasn't reloaded the configuration files yet, it is using the Zerion home page as the ''catch-all'' for unresolved domain names.

Q:    How do I upload stuff?

A:   You must use an FTP client (such as WS-FTP or CuteFTP) to upload your web-pages and other files to Zerion.

Q:    When I try to log into ftp://ftp.zerion.com/myaccount it says ''unknown host''. Why?

A:   It's a goofy FTP client problem: make sure that the address you're connecting to is ''ftp.zerion.com'' (not ftp://ftp.zerion.com/myaccount).

Q:    What's a ''client''?

A:                  *blink*          *blink*

Q:    When I signed up I requested that I see my logs. The files are there, but when people visit my site, it isn't logged. How come?

A:   Well, there are a couple of different ways people could see your site. If they go to yoursite.zerion.com then the hits get recorded in your log. If they go to www.zerion.com/yoursite then the hits get recorded in my log.

Q:   How do I change my password?

A:   You can do it with your FTP client; issue the following command:

SITE PSWD old_password new_password

Q:    How do I change my username?

A:   You don't; go to the sign-up request form and fill out a request for another account. In the comment box, let me know you want your account changed.

Q:    How do I change file permissions or make files ''hidden''?

A:   Remember that all files you upload are made publicly available via anonymous FTP.

Q:    Does Zerion support CGI/PHP/perl/ASP/(insert favorite server-side processing here) ?

A:   No, this would create entirely new challenges to making Zerion secure, reliable, and responsive. There are other sites out there that specialize in that sort of thing. Go sign-up with one of them and use your Zerion account in parallel.
