Sorry about the recent
flakiness of the web server. It was my fault. I upgraded Xitami
to the latest version (2.5b4) and it just wouldn't run for long
without crashing. So, todayI just reverted back to the earlier version
Zerion's been running for so long without problems. Hopefully it's
all cleared up now.

I wonder why folks don't use the Artist Wallboard to announce their site. Seems like a bunch of folks would want to announce their sites using the wallboard, right?

A day that will live
in infamy. Zerion comes back. From the dead. You just. Can't. Kill.
It.
Yes, coming back very
slowly at first; we'll see what happens folks. I don't know if this
is permanent yet. Hold your breath.
We're currently getting
many many requests per day for new accounts. Sorry, I can't sign
you all up. If you didn't get signed up though, and you're looking
for web hosting for REAL cheap, try Darkscape.net.
You won't be disappointed for sure; sites hosted as low as $5/mo.

Edna got onto a tech for saying the "GD" word.
She said I was a nut. A complete nut - for posting that.
I made flashies :-) It cycles about every 6 seconds, so you could miss it. 1x50 animated pixel that cost 388 bytes. I was just trying to come up with ideas to make the site a little flashier, without adding lots of graphics or extra work. My first idea was a menu bar that changed from blue to red to blue!
I really should try to write more often here. Maybe I will start telling you about my personal life... nahhhh.

Hello MeanMonkeys. Yes, I'm talkin' to you. :-)
Okay... thanks to everyone for being so patient while I make extensive upgrades to Zerion. Here's what you were waiting for:
Extra space - 23 extra gigabytes just for you!
Upgraded OS, patches
Upgraded Web server to latest version
Upgraded FTP server to latest version

It all started when I finally got the new drive in (a day late, mind you) to upgrade the server. First, it took *forever* because the thing wouldn't recognize the drive. I'm not even going to scare you with what I had to do to get it to work. But alas, the new drive is in and Zerion now has twice as much space as before.
So, finally at 12:30am, I go out to the parking lot, and where is my car? It's nowwhere to be found. It GOT TOWED!!! Bam $121.24 (and they want cash, exact change). Finally it's 4:45am and go home and get to sleep. I'll complain to the complex owners in a few hours.
9:45am, I dazily and grumbly awaken, and get up to go complain to the complex responsible for getting my car towed. And what happens on the way there? I get a speeding ticket! Man! This is gonna get expensive.
Grrr...

Zerion welcomes Benedict Loh, CEO, as an official team member. Benedict is my new administrator. Please give him a warm welcome and say hello!

Yes, I've been neglecting my Zerion for way too long now. But it just goes to show that I built this thing t run on its own. This morning from about 1:00am to 10:am, I had the webserver off line as I was straightening out the logs. Everything is now back in working order.
I could use suggestions for a new site of the month, so feel free to email me any suggestions. Even if you're not a member, send me a note.
Well I never thought I'd see the day of the end of this 17-gig drive I installed April of last year. Since its been installed, Zerion users are currently consuming 16.5 gigs of space! Only .5 gig left. Whoops. Time to order another drive!
Okay, I've got an additional 40.9 Gig drive ordered and should be here by the end of the week. Yes, all of this really did happen in one day. Your admin is *so* nice! :-)
Ha ha! Zerion.com - Shelterer who addresses to the musicians. That's rich!

Doh I forgot to mention - tyro.zerion.com is the new Featured Site for February!
Had a little down-time this evening: just got through installing a watchdog for Zerion. This should eliminate 99% of my headaches.

Happy Birthday, Zerion!
Zerion is one year old today! It's been a fun year!
Here's a little Zerion history:
One day, in November of 1999, I realized what a humongous toilet bowl of illegal software, illegal mp3's, and pornography the Internet had become. It was disgusting to me. And most free web hosts didn't help matters any; they usually only gave 5 megabytes of web-space, forced ads, and disallowed storage certain kinds of file types.
I wondered what it would take for me to create a new host -- one that would inspire people to create their own works of art without ripping off others. One that wouldn't force ads, impose space limitations, or file types. This is the very core of Zerion philosophy!
So, I began carefully putting together a new -- but simple -- machine, and affectionately named it "Servant." Servant is the little engine that could: a Pentium 233 with 96 megs of memory and 34 gigabytes of drive space. According to the logs, the OS was installed and running at 1:10am, November 20, 1999.
Servant ran as benjamin.yi.org (anyone remember that?) until January, 2000. 49 artists had accounts at the time. Then I decided it needed a real domain name. Many names Zerion almost was:
- bammajamma.com -we were SO close to this!
- gigsandgigs.com
- sensoryshock.com
- sensoryadventure.com
- toothgrinder.com
- zerion.com
- screamingtower.com -pretty close, too!
- sensesoverload.com
- suddensilence.com
- audioeruption.com -which became a joke "audioerection"
- musicspasm.com
Servant actually operated uner "bammajamma.com" until I saw a commercial for BAMA Jam... doh! But Zerion.com eventually won, and it's been that way for a whole year.
Today, Zerion hosts 192 websites, with an average of over 1.1 million hits transferring 67 gigabytes per month!
Not too shabby for a single Pentium 233 running Windows 95. (Screenshot of Servant's Console)

Motherboards are the most difficult part of a computer to replace.

November 1, 2000
Happy November!
Several things to report. The scheduled end-of-the-month downtime went off without a single hitch; which includes rotating logs and disk maintenance, etc.
Also, please take a look at the new Art Resource page (new menu item on the bar at the top). This sub-site will be managed by epiphany.

I think I've finally got the Zerion banner exactly how I want it to look. Either it was too "dirty" looking or too flat... hopefully it looks just right now.
Now maybe I can start to tackle the music showcase page. Perhaps a whole new way of workin' it is in order (dream_sequence_initiated).

Folks, I know the Music Showcase is very outdated. The whole format of that page is about to change anyway, maybe adding a more of a Top-Ten List type thing (tm); still thinking on it.

Briefly brought server down for routine maintenance of disk drives. Total down time was 3 minutes.

Hmm... 40% packet loss... this is not good...
Okay - as it turned out, it was my provider and not the services on my end. Good to go! They had me goin' for a little while, though...

End-of-month log-rotation and hardware check. All okay! This really is too easy.
